St Dunstan
St Dunstan lived between 909 and 988 AD. He was born at Baltonsborough and grew up in Glastonbury where he became Abbot in 942. He reformed and developed the ancient monastery along Benedictine lines as a major spiritual, cultural and educational centre. He became Archbishop of Canterbury in 960 and on his death was acclaimed a saint
St Alphege
St Alphege lived between 954 and 1012 AD. Noble-born in Weston in Somerset, he became a monk in early life before moving to Bath where he became an anchorite and was then elected abbot of Bath Abbey. His piety and sanctity led to his promotion to the episcopate, and eventually becoming Archbishop of Canterbury.Whilst at Canterbury he furthered the cult of St Dunstan, and ordered the writing of the second 'Life of St Dunstan' composed by Adelard between 1006 and 1011. He became a saint in the year 1078 with a feast day of 19th April.
